Youth in Garissa County have thrown their support behind Mohamed Moulid Shurie in his bid for the gubernatorial seat in the 2027 elections, citing his expertise in water resource management and commitment to development.

Mr. Shurie, the current Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Water Resources Authority (WRA) of Kenya, is a seasoned hydrogeologist with over 32 years of experience. He holds degrees in Physics, Mathematics, Geology, and an Executive Master of Business Administration.

According to Garissa Youth Chairperson Mr. Nasteh Farah Buraze, young people believe that Mr. Shurie’s leadership will be instrumental in addressing the county’s persistent water challenges.

“The youth of Garissa support MM Shurie because we believe he is best positioned to enhance water supply networks in both urban and rural areas,” said Mr. Buraze.

Garissa, a semi-arid region, has long struggled with water scarcity. Mr. Buraze emphasized that Mr. Shurie’s leadership could bring significant investments in boreholes, reservoirs, and irrigation systems, improving access to clean water and reducing waterborne diseases.

As head of the WRA, Mr. Shurie has led efforts to regulate and safeguard Kenya’s water resources, earning national recognition for his contributions. His work has been praised for ensuring long-term sustainability and water quality across the country.

Expanding Education and Economic Opportunities

Beyond water management, Mr. Buraze highlighted the need for reforms in the county’s education sector, particularly in Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE). He expressed confidence that Mr. Shurie would prioritize expanding and improving these centers, as well as vocational training programs to equip youth with practical skills for employment.

Garissa youth engaged Mr. Shurie last week during President William Ruto’s visit to the North Eastern region, where development issues were discussed. The president’s four-day tour covered Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo counties.

Agriculture and Economic Growth

Despite its arid climate, Garissa has significant agricultural potential, particularly through irrigation along the Tana River. Mr. Buraze noted that Mr. Shurie has pledged to support farmers by promoting modern irrigation techniques, providing improved seeds, and ensuring better market access.

“Previous administrations have failed to empower farmers with the necessary tools and techniques, but we believe Shurie will change this,” he said.

Additionally, Mr. Shurie aims to develop sustainable livestock farming and support small businesses through funding and training. His plans also include attracting investors to create job opportunities for the youth.

Recognized for Public Service

Mr. Shurie has been honored for his contributions to public service. In 2023, President William Ruto awarded him the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS), while in 2021, he received both the Head of State’s Commendation (HSC) – Civilian Division and the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) from former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

With his extensive experience and track record of leadership, Mr. Buraze expressed confidence that Mr. Shurie is the right leader to transform Garissa County.

“The youth of Garissa believe MM Shurie has the vision and ability to bring real change and improve the lives of residents,” he said.
