Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has unveiled his final 23-man squad for Kenya’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Gambia and Gabon.
McCarthy made bold decisions as he trimmed the provisional list, signaling his intent to build a balanced and competitive side.
The final squad includes five local-based players: Farouk Shikhalo, Rooney Onyango, Manzur Okwaro, Ben Stanley Omondi, and Mohammed Bajaber.
Notable exclusions include Australian-born midfielder William Lenkupae and Gor Mahia’s in-form midfielder Austin Odhiambo, despite his stellar performances in the FKF Premier League.
Odhiambo’s omission, along with that of other Gor Mahia players such as Sylvester Owino and Alpha Onyango, has sparked debate among fans and analysts.
McCarthy defended his choices by emphasizing the importance of experience and tactical balance over recent club form.
Kenya will first face Gambia on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at Stade Alassane Ouattara in Ivory Coast.
This away fixture is expected to be a tough challenge as Gambia has proven to be a formidable opponent in recent outings. A strong performance in this match will be crucial for Harambee Stars’ chances of progressing in the qualifiers.
The team will then return home to take on Gabon at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi on Sunday, March 23, 2025. Scheduled to kick off at 4 PM, this match presents an opportunity for Kenya to capitalize on home advantage and secure vital points.
The squad includes goalkeepers Ian Otieno, Brian Bwire, and Farouk Shikhalo. Defenders Jonstone Omurwa, Brian Mandela, Daniel Anyembe, Amos Nondi, Erick Ouma, Manzur Okwaro, and Rooney Onyango will provide defensive solidity. Midfielders Anthony Akumu, Richard Odada, Ismael Gonzalez, Timothy Ouma, Eric Johana, Duke Abuya, Mohammed Bajaber, and Ben Stanley Omondi will drive the team’s attack. Forwards Masud Juma, Jonah Ayunga, Elvis Rupia, John Avire, and Michael Olunga will lead the line.
This will be McCarthy’s first major test since taking over as head coach. Kenya currently sits fourth in Group F with five points after four matches. With only two matches remaining in this round of qualifiers, Kenya must secure strong results against Gambia and Gabon to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
