Over 1,200 children aged 14 and below benefited from health talks and soap donations during a week-long public health campaign for measles and typhoid vaccination in Machakos County.

The county—along with much of Eastern Kenya—is prone to measles and typhoid outbreaks due to a combination of limited access to clean water, poor sanitation, climate factors, and low routine immunization coverage.
Pwani Oil Products Ltd partnered with the Kenya Progressive Nurses Association (KPNA), the Ministry of Health, and the County Government of Machakos to roll out the sensitization campaign at Machakos Level 5 Hospital, which also extended to nearby dispensaries.
The campaign, which combined vaccination efforts with hygiene education, aimed to reduce the spread of communicable diseases by vaccinating children against measles and typhoid in both urban and remote parts of the county.
“We are proud to work alongside the government and health professionals to promote not just immunization, but also the importance of personal hygiene in curbing the spread of disease,” said Pwani Oil Commercial Director Rajul Malde.
During the campaign, frontline nurses led health talks and hygiene demonstrations, while Detrex soap was distributed to caregivers and patients in the hospital’s typhoid ward, as well as to community members in remote areas.
KPNA mobilized nurses and health educators who engaged mothers and caregivers at Machakos Level 5 Hospital with live demonstrations on effective handwashing practices, underlining the critical role of hygiene in preventing the spread of typhoid, measles, and other communicable diseases.
Patients and caregivers received gift hampers containing Pwani Oil’s Detrex soap, as part of an ongoing brand campaign that targets women and acknowledges their vital role in family health and hygiene.
Detrex, an antibacterial soap developed to serve at-risk communities, comes in four variants—Aloe Vera, Cool Mint, Citronella Oil, and Pine Drops—designed to meet diverse preferences while offering strong germ protection.
“Our goal is to move Detrex from being just a product to becoming a trusted ally in every home. By activating where it matters most—among women and caregivers—we’re turning hygiene awareness into action, and trust into loyalty,” added Mr. Malde.
This campaign is part of Pwani Oil’s People Pillar under its social impact agenda, which prioritizes community health, disease prevention, and strategic partnerships that improve daily health outcomes across Kenya.
