The Senate Majority Whip and Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale faces disciplinary action over allegations of openly supporting a rival candidate in the upcoming Malava parliamentary by-election.

In formal notice issued by the party’s Disciplinary Committee, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) accuses Khalwale of engaging in “open, vocal, conspicuous and substantial support” for a candidate from another political party, an act it says is contrary to its constitution and code of conduct.

The committee says Khalwale’s actions amount to gross misconduct and disloyalty, noting that he has been actively promoting the interests of an opponent running against UDA’s official candidate.

“Your said participation and activities clearly demonstrate allegiance to another political party and constitute conduct unbecoming and disloyalty to the UDA Party,” reads part of the notice.

“Article 4 of the party constitution obligates a member to popularise the party, observe discipline, and comply with party decisions,” the committee states.

Citing Articles 68 and 69 of the UDA Constitution, the disciplinary committee warns that Khalwale could face sanctions ranging from suspension to expulsion should he fail to provide a satisfactory explanation.

“You are hereby required to show cause why appropriate disciplinary action should not be taken against you,” the notice says.

“You have 14 days to respond, after which the committee may summon you for a hearing.”

The party also reminds Khalwale that he is entitled to represent himself or appear with legal counsel during the proceedings, as provided for in the party’s constitution.

Khalwale, popularly known as the Bullfighter, has in recent weeks found himself on a collision course with UDA leadership in Western Kenya over his political activities and outspoken remarks.

He has publicly appeared alongside candidates not endorsed by UDA, drawing criticism from party loyalists who accuse him of undermining unity ahead of the Malava by-election.

UDA’s David Ndakwa will square it out with DAP-K’s Seth Panyako among others in the November 27 by-election.

Khalwale has declared support for Panyako.

The seat fell vacant following the death of Malulu Injendi.
