More than 1 billion people are living with mental health disorders globally, according to a new report by the World Health Organization (WHO) with vast majority of these cases are in low- and middle-income countries such as Kenya.
Mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression now represent the second biggest cause of long-term disability worldwide, contributing significantly to loss of healthy life and driving up healthcare costs for affected individuals and families.
While mental health challenges affect both genders, women are disproportionately impacted, underscoring the urgent need for awareness, compassion, and community-driven interventions.
In Kenya, findings by the Ministry of Health show that the most common mental illnesses include depression and suicide, substance use disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other psychoses. The prevalence of these conditions highlights the importance of continued public education and support to end stigma and foster understanding at community level.
Against this backdrop, Pwani Oil Limited, through its Detrex Antibacterial Soap, joined the world in commemorating World Mental Health Day under the 2025 theme: “To increase public awareness about the importance of mental health, mental health services, and mental health workers worldwide.”
As part of its People Pillar that prioritizes community well-being, Pwani Oil partnered with the Kenya Professional Nurses Association (KPNA), Chiromo Hospital for an activation drive at the Chiromo Hospital and within the surrounding community.
The event attracted hundreds of participants and featured a variety of engaging activities designed to foster both physical and mental wellness. The activities included family aerobics, dance warm-ups, rotating sports such as tug-of-war, football, relays, and a 5 km walk, aimed at promoting bonding and emotional wellbeing.
Other fun activities included face painting, crafts, and board games that an inclusive touch. The highlight of the day was a mini mental health chat dubbed “Tufunguke Talk”, which provided a safe space to break the silence on anxiety, resilience, and emotional health.
To celebrate the participants and reaffirm their commitment to healthier communities, body and mind, some 120 participants received Detrex Antibacterial Soap hampers.
“Through initiatives like this, we aim to not only support our communities but also inspire open conversations that end stigma and promote compassion,” said Rajul Malde, Commercial Director, Pwani Oil Limited.
