Breaking Ground in Health Research: The 16th KEMRI Annual Scientific and Health Conference (KASH 2026)
In a defining moment for Kenya’s science and health sectors, the 16th KEMRI Annual Scientific and Health Conference (KASH 2026) officially kicked off in Nairobi this week, gathering leading researchers, policymakers, innovators, and development partners from across Africa and around the world.
Organised by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), KASH has evolved into one of East Africa’s foremost scientific platforms. Since its inception in 2010, it has served as a crucial forum for sharing research, strengthening partnerships, mentoring emerging scientists, and advancing action-oriented solutions to pressing health challenges.
This year’s conference is held at the Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi, and runs from February 10 through February 13, 2026. The overarching theme — “The Future of Health: Scientific Research, Innovations, Technologies and Manufacturing for a Resilient Universal Health Coverage” — reflects deepening conversations about how research can be translated into real-world impact for Kenyan and regional health systems.
Local Vaccine Manufacturing Takes Center Stage
A highlight of the pre-conference and opening agenda was the focus on strengthening Kenya’s vaccine research, development, and manufacturing capacity — a strategic priority that aligns with national goals for health security, economic empowerment, and scientific self-reliance. Cabinet Secretary for Health, Hon. Aden Duale, emphasized during the official opening that robust vaccine manufacturing is critical not just for public health but also for economic competitiveness and job creation across the region.
Experts and plenary speakers — including leaders from academic, policy, and industrial sectors — discussed frameworks for technology transfer, workforce development, regulatory pathways, and investment strategies needed to underpin local vaccine production.
A Rich Scientific Programme
Over the four days, KASH 2026 showcases an ambitious programme featuring:
- Plenary sessions with global and regional thought leaders
- 20 scientific symposiums spanning infectious diseases, genomics, digital health, biotechnology, and health systems strengthening
- Cutting-edge research presentations by scientists and young investigators
- Panel discussions focusing on translating evidence into policy and practice
The conference has also been a stage for emerging voices in science, with opportunities like the KASH Rising Star Awards encouraging early-career researchers to present their work and build professional visibility.
Bridging Science and Policy for Universal Health Coverage
Beyond pure research dialogue, a central thread at KASH 2026 has been Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Speakers reiterated that innovation, local manufacturing, and technology adoption must go hand-in-hand with policy coherence and strategic investment to ensure quality, equitable health services for all Kenyans.
With strong participation from government, academia, the private sector, and development partners, the 16th KASH Conference is shaping up to be a milestone event — one that pushes Kenya’s health and science sectors closer to a future where evidence-driven innovation drives resilient and sustainable systems.
