National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi arrived at Parliament on Thursday to present the 2026/27 National Budget in a carefully choreographed and symbolic procession that underscored the significance of the occasion.
Mbadi made his way to Parliament aboard a grey Peugeot whose number plate had been specially customised with the inscription “BUDGET FY 2026–2027,” immediately signalling the purpose of the journey and drawing attention from onlookers and members of the media gathered at the precincts of Parliament.
The Treasury Cabinet Secretary was dressed in a sharp blue suit, complemented by a red flower pinned neatly to his left lapel. The flower added a distinctive touch to the ceremonial appearance that has traditionally accompanied budget day proceedings.
In keeping with long-standing parliamentary tradition, Mbadi carried the iconic black budget briefcase containing the official budget documents. The briefcase remains one of the most recognisable symbols of budget day, representing the government’s fiscal plans and policy priorities for the coming financial year.
The arrival marked the beginning of one of the most closely watched events on the country’s economic calendar, with Kenyans, businesses, investors, and policymakers awaiting details of the government’s spending plans, taxation measures, and economic priorities for the 2026/27 financial year.
The budget presentation comes at a time when the government continues to balance fiscal consolidation efforts with the need to support economic growth, job creation, and public service delivery.
Mbadi’s symbolic arrival set the tone for the day’s proceedings as Parliament prepared to receive the government’s financial blueprint for the year ahead.
