Gender- based violence (GBV) continues to be a menace especially in developing countries.
Speaking during the launch of ‘Virtual Justice’ publication, Nancy Ikinu, FIDA Kenya chairperson said 1 in every 5 women globally experience gender-based violence mostly by people known to them.
Chief Justice Martha Koome said the judiciary is considering special courts in order to speedy such cases.
“Malawi has gender-based related courts where by cases are heard and ruling made within six months. Uganda also gives such cases a priority,” she stated.
Tabitha Obuya, the Deputy Head of Offences Against the Person (OAP) at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution said eradicating FGM requires multiple stakeholders such as the police, courts, communities among others.
She affirmed that the Director of Public Prosecution has formed a specialised unit of 61 prosecutors spread across the country and concentrated in FGM hotspot areas.
Kenya vowed to end gender-based violence by 2026 with several commitments thta would Spearhead Spearhead Anti-FGM campaigns.
