The Jubilee Party Nairobi Gubernatorial hopeful Richard Ngatia today took his campaigns to Kibera slums where he promised to ensure that his administration brings visible development in the slum areas of Nairobi.
Ngatia held a mega rally at Kibera’s Kamukunji grounds as he took the Azimio La Umoja coalition clarion call to the populous area that is the political bedrock of the Azimio La Umoja Presidential candidate Raila Odinga.
During the rally, Ngatia asked Kibera residents to support his bid to become the fourth governor of Nairobi at the August 9th, 2022 general elections.
The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) president addressed issues that affect residents of the area as well as other informal settlement areas within Nairobi.
Speaking, Ngatia said that his administration will among other things address the rampant water shortage problem across the city.
“Many people in the slums do not have water because of cartels who sell the water that they get from bursting pipes. These water vendors are expensive. I will ensure we fix this problem once and for all to have every household connected to piped-water,” Ngatia told the crowd.
Ngatia also said that his government will fix the unemployment crisis in the city. He outlined a number of strategies, among them luring more investors for industrialisation and directly involving youths in environmental and sanitation programs to transform the economic state of the people of Nairobi.
Ngatia has promised to build more public toilets within the slums, main markets, satellite towns around the CBD and other fast growing areas.
“Public toilets generate a lot of money and that money should benefit the youth as the community gets proper sanitation. We want to forget the infamous flying toilet problem,” Ngatia said.
“We should have the youth work at this public toilets as a way to create employment for them and make the environment clean. We are going to build more and have 100 youths taking care of each one of them,” Ngatia added.
Ngatia, a close ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta pulled a huge crowd following is vigorous efforts to popularise the candidature of the Azimio La Umoja presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga who for a long time was the area Member of Parliament.
Ngatia said that he will work on the city emergency response systems to ensure the county has more fire stations and is well prepared in the area of disaster management. Fires have time and again burned down houses in the slum areas leaving a trail of destruction and loss of livelihoods.
“We will ensure we have satellite fire fighting centres in major fire hotspots like Gikomba and Toy Market in Kibera,” He said.
“We are committed to offer solutions and we will strive to secure our business people, their wealth and families because we are Nairobi and we all belong to Nairobi,” he added.
